Utilities / Fix caption sync

Repair the timing in a caption file you already have

When the right words appear at the wrong moment, first find out whether the problem is a fixed offset, changing speed or a local edit.

Try this in the assistant

This guide is in English. The assistant supports 83 interface languages.

Check three points in the recording

Compare one clear moment near the start, one in the middle and one near the end. Write down whether the caption is early or late at each point. This gives the assistant better evidence than saying the file is out of sync.

  • Similar error throughout: consider moving all timestamps by a fixed amount.
  • Error grows steadily: investigate playback speed or a different media version.
  • Sudden jumps after cuts: repair the affected sections separately.

Preserve an original and preview the repair

A global timing change affects every cue. Keep a copy before applying it and inspect the beginning and end afterward. Explain the direction in plain language, such as 'show the captions half a second earlier', if a positive or negative offset is confusing.

Untimed lyrics need alignment first

This repair workflow assumes there are timestamps to adjust. If you only have audio and words, use LyricTimestamps for automatic alignment and word-level refinement before returning to file conversion or delivery tasks.

Questions about this workflow

Can one shift fix every sync issue?

Only when the error is approximately constant. Drift or several cuts in the recording need a different correction.

Does changing playback speed alter the words?

A timing scale changes when cues appear. It does not rewrite text or create missing words.

What should I tell the assistant?

Name the format, describe any edits to the recording and give an example of an early or late caption. Include the target player or editor.
