Convert ASS and SSA subtitles to SRT
Convert ASS or SSA subtitles into plain SRT that any editor or player can open. The timing and text are kept; styling is removed and listed. Runs in your browser.
This guide is in English. The assistant supports 83 interface languages.
Convert your file
Free, no sign-up. Your file is read and converted in this browser and is never uploaded.
What is kept
Every dialogue line becomes an SRT caption with the same start and end time. Override tags such as bold and italic markers are removed from the text so they do not show up as literal braces.
What SRT cannot hold
ASS is a styled format: fonts, colours, outlines and on-screen positions all live in the file. SRT is plain timed text, so those are dropped. Karaoke timing written with \k tags is joined back into whole lines, because SRT has no word timing. The converter names each of these when it happens.
Keep the original
If the styling or the karaoke effect matters, keep the ASS file for players that read it, and use the SRT where a plain caption track is what is asked for.
Questions about this workflow
What happens to fonts, colours and positions?
SRT is plain timed text, so styles, colours and positions are removed. The converter lists what it left out, so nothing disappears silently.
What about karaoke timing tags?
Karaoke syllable timing is joined back into whole lines, because SRT has no word timing. Keep the ASS file if you need the karaoke effect.
Does it read older SSA files?
Yes. Both .ass and the older SubStation Alpha .ssa files are read.
