This guide is in English. The assistant supports 83 interface languages.
Convert your file
Free, no sign-up. Your file is read and converted in this browser and is never uploaded.
Why renaming is not enough
A WebVTT file must begin with WEBVTT and writes its milliseconds after a full stop, where SRT uses a comma. Many browsers and players reject a renamed SRT outright, or show nothing without an error.
1 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500 Hello world becomes WEBVTT 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:03.500 Hello world
Nothing is lost going this way
Everything an SRT contains has a WebVTT equivalent, so the text and every time carry over unchanged.
Adding the file to a web page
Reference it from your video element with a track tag whose kind is captions or subtitles, and serve it as text/vtt. Most video hosts also accept a WebVTT upload directly.
Questions about this workflow
Why not just rename .srt to .vtt?
WebVTT needs a WEBVTT header and writes timestamps with a full stop where SRT uses a comma. A renamed SRT is rejected by many web players.
Is anything lost?
No. Everything an SRT holds has a WebVTT equivalent, so the captions and their times carry over unchanged.
How do I use the file on my site?
Add it to your HTML5 video as a track element with kind captions or subtitles, or upload it where your video host asks for a caption file.
