Convert WebVTT captions to SRT
Convert WebVTT captions into an SRT file for editors and players that only accept SRT. The conversion happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
This guide is in English. The assistant supports 83 interface languages.
Convert your file
Free, no sign-up. Your file is read and converted in this browser and is never uploaded.
What changes
The WEBVTT header is removed, the timestamp separator changes from a full stop to a comma, and every caption is given the sequence number SRT expects. The words and their times are kept.
WEBVTT 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:03.500 Hello world becomes 1 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500 Hello world
What SRT cannot hold
WebVTT can place a caption on screen and name who is speaking with a voice tag. SRT has no equivalent for either, so cue settings and speaker names are left out, and the converter tells you when that happened.
Captions downloaded from YouTube
A caption file you have already downloaded, whether .vtt or YouTube's own .sbv, converts here. This page does not fetch captions from YouTube for you.
Questions about this workflow
What changes in the file?
The WEBVTT header goes, timestamps switch from a full stop to a comma and every caption is numbered. Cue positions and voice tags such as <v Singer> have no SRT equivalent, so they are left out and listed.
Can I convert captions downloaded from YouTube?
Yes, if you already have the file: a downloaded .vtt or .sbv converts here. This page does not fetch captions from YouTube itself.
Will the words change?
No. Only the timing format and the caption structure change. Open the result in your editor to confirm it lines up.
